Types of Toothpaste

Brushing your teeth daily and making sure you visit your dentist regularly will keep your teeth and gums healthy. Dental care is very important and with the rising cost of dental treatments it is wise to have dental insurance to help cover the costs.

There are so many different toothpastes available today that just trying to choose the right one will make your head spin. Toothpaste advertisments say that we should use different toothpastes for different reasons, such as tartar control and whitening teeth. When it comes down to it, most toothpastes all have the same basic ingredients.

Toothpaste is used to remove plaque, maintain tooth enamel and to get bits and pieces of food from in between your teeth. Toothpaste not only helps to keep your teeth clean it also leaves your breath smelling clean and improves your smile.

Today most toothpaste contains fluoride, which is an ingredient to help stop your teeth from decaying. Fluoride is useful in small amounts and has been shown to slow or stop tooth decay. The standard tooth paste has a small amount of fluoride and minimal abrasives to be effective when brushing your teeth.

There are toothpastes made for sensitive teeth. Besides having the normal ingredients in standard toothpaste, it also contains potassium chloride, which helps to prevent sensitive teeth. There are toothpastes made for children either contain a very small amount of fluoride to prevent staining of the teeth or none at all. Babies and children under 18 months do not even require the use of toothpaste as a delicate wipe with a damp cloth over the teeth and gums after meals is all that is required. See our blog about babies' teeth.

There are also whitening toothpastes available and these should be used with care. This is because they can sometimes be harsh but they do help to remove stains from teeth. There is a growing trend towards natural or organic / chemical free toothpaste which many American parents are moving towards. Perhaps this is a trend we will see more of in the UK.

It is recommended that you consult your dentist before you make any decisions on which toothpaste is best for you. Simply mention this at your next dental checkup. Your dentist will be only too happy to help.

Dental care is very important to the health of you and your family members. You can protect their teeth by making sure you have dental insurance to cover any routine of unexpected injuries. This will keep them healthy and give you peace of mind at the same time.
