The Use Of Analgesics In Dentistry

The usual method for pain relief during dentistry is a local anesthetic applied to the gum. This will numb the area to be worked on, is quick and effective but what happens if you’re afraid of the pain? Dencover dental insurance plans cover will currently cover 100% of the cost of NHS dental treatment you recieve. *Subject to change as this may change. Please see our website for full and current details.

Some people are so afraid of going to the dentist that they will not have dental treatment at all. Not having any dental treatment can lead to all sorts of health problems later in life and it's not restricted to just dental health either. Poor dental health can lead to diabetes and heart problems.

Analgesics are painkillers. Analgesia is the inability to feel pain even while conscious and is translated from the Greek an (without) algesis (sense of pain).

Those people who have a genuine fear of dentists can overcome their fears with relaxation and/or sedation. Dentists are very sympathetic towards their patients feelings, and you can ask your dentist for ways to help.

The dentist may recommend sedation given intravenously into the back of the hand or arm. This takes a little while for the effects to leave the body and you should not drive, work machinery or drink any alcohol until the effects have worn off.

Another method is inhalation sedation, which is breathing in laughing gas. Don’t worry, you will not go into hysterical fists of laughter, but you will feel pleasantly relaxed. If you are worried about breathing gas, you cannot overdose on it and the effects leave your body quickly.

You will be able to drive a car within fifteen minutes of leaving the dentists chair. Many dentists prefer this technique because it is safe and effective with no lingering after effects.

Whatever the concern is that you may have, always consult with your dentist about your concerns or any health conditions when you make your initial visit. It is also a good idea to think about buying dental health insurance if you do not currently have cover.
